Field Note: Osprey Enjoying Lunch

While sauntering along a trail skirting saltwater wetlands and briefly a hardwood swamp I was delighted to observe an Osprey perched high in a Long-leaf Pine about to enjoy its mid-day fish lunch.

Ospreys, also known as Fish or Sea Hawk, are distinctive brown and white birds of prey smaller than Eagles and larger than Red-Tailed Hawks. Ospreys are diurnal hunters typically observed near bodies of shallow fresh or salt water as their primary food source is fish.
