Field Note: Chimney Rock

While taking this photograph of Chimney Rock in northwestern Nebraska my mind attempted to bring into focus the countless Native American travelers who for centuries as well as those who later in the mid 1800s traversed the approximately 2,000 mile long OregonTrail. They all used Chimney Rock, reaching about 200 feet into the high plains sky as a navigation aid to help find their way in an expansive grassland sea.

The Oregon Trail ran along the north side (right side of photograph) of Chimney Rock.
