Field Notes: Solitary Bison Making a Sage Creek Crossing
According to the United State’s National Park service there are approximately 1,200 bison that call South Dakota’s Badlands home. This herd is now the second largest federally managed herd behind those inhabiting Yellowstone National Park. Today these massive iconic wandering beasts range across more than 80,000 acres of mostly mixed-grass prairie primarily in the North Unit Sage Creek Wilderness area of the park.

Location Details & Camera Settings
Although rather common to observe bison (takanka) in the Badlands National Park it is always a treat to see these amazing beasts of the prairie in their native environment where an estimated 30 to 60 Million once roamed the Great Plain’s broad expanse before being hunted to near extinction.
