Field Notes: High Plains Sunset

The photograph below, “High Plaines Sunset” was recently captured near Toadstool Geological Park and Campground in northwestern Nebraska.

The High Plaines is a semi-aired, short grass prairie subregion of the Great Plains within the United State covering portions of eight states including: southeastern Wyoming, southwestern South Dakota, western Nebraska, eastern Colorado, western Kansas, eastern New Mexico, western Oklahoma, and northwestern Texas.

Known for having the lowest population density of any geographical area within the continental United States the High Plains natural spaces spread its raw majesty across 174,000 square miles of wide open rugged landscape.

Location Details & Camera Settings

Within the Oglala National Grasslands and near the dirt entrance road toToadstool Geological Park and Campground in northwestern Nebraska. The park’s small campground popular with hikers is a public, fee based, first come first serve primitive experience offering covered tables, fire rings and vault toilets.
