Great Egret
The beautifully stately and stutuesque Great Egret is a rather common wading bird observed in rather large numbers around the world. Its dagger shaped bill is used to hunt in shallow fresh or salt water for fish and most any small aquatic animal. Although Great Egrets are colonial nester they often hunt alone. As highly specialized hunters Great Egrets can stand motionless for long periods close to the shoreline to get a better view of water below and patiently wait for unsuspecting pray to happen by before they strike with lightning speed.
